Rejecting Error

In the fifty-third chapter of Isaiah we have been given a graphic prophecy of the human experiences which awaited the promised Messiah. Among other things we read, "With his stripes we are healed." An illuminating interpretation of this statement is given by Mary Baker Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." There she says (p. 20), "Jesus bore our infirmities; he knew the error of mortal belief, and 'with his stripes [the rejection of error] we are healed.'"

What enabled Jesus always successfully to reject error, annul its claims, and efface its seeming effects? His at-one-ment with God, whom he calls "the Father." He knew the Father as Spirit. He knew that all creation, all condition, all true existence, is like the Father, divine Mind, or Spirit. He knew that true creation has never been changed or interfered with; that it is from everlasting to everlasting, complete and perfect in infinite being and expression. This truth of which Jesus was conscious, unobstructed by false belief, rejected the lie without controversy or struggle, even as light dispels darkness by the nature of its being.

How an understanding of this simplifies the work of the Christian Scientist and lifts it above struggle and argument into understanding and reflection! When one knows and accepts the truth, he ceases to argue or struggle with that which denies the truth; neither is he disturbed or discouraged by the claims of falsity. He knows their nonexistence and, remaining in the light of Truth, is serene and unafraid. He truly understands what the Master meant when he said (John 8:32). "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
