When I first began the study of...
When I first began the study of Christian Science I was so absorbed in my new-found treasure that I did not realize until some time later that I had been healed ol a small blemish on my eye and of constipation, the latter being of many years' standing. As I pondered the reason for these healings, since no specific work had been done, I began to see that they had taken place as a result of the basic change in my thinking and had been brought about through my acceptance of the truth taught in Christian Science. Since then there have been many times when I have had to hold fast to divine Principle in order to overcome various phases of discord, but never once has Science failed me. When honestly and earnestly applied, it has always brought right results.
The following experience helped me to realize the importance of Jesus' words (Mark 8:18). "Having eyes, see ye not?" One Saturday afternoon I splashed some cleaning fluid in my face and eyes. Almost immediately my vision became so blurred that I could not see clearly enough to read. One of our sons was home at the time, and he read to me from the chapter entitled "Footsteps of Truth" in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. This quieted my thought somewhat and I tried to go about my work in the best way I could.
The condition did not improve, however, and I decided to ask a practitioner for help, which was lovingly given. Then I thought I should sit quietly and try to repeat some of the truths that I had memorized. I closed my eyes, and the mental pictures that I saw were clearly defined and not distorted. This helped me to realize that the blurred vision was the product of the human organism only, and could be overcome through the realization that true vision is "spiritual discernment,— not material but mental," as Mrs. Eddy defines "eyes" (ibid., p. 586). I saw that sight is, therefore, not dependent on the human organism. This brought to me such a beautiful sense of peace and calm that by the time I retired my sight was quite normal.
