In 1913 I accepted an invitation...

In 1913 I accepted an invitation to attend for the first time a Wednesday evening meeting in a Christian Science church. During that meeting several persons testified to healings brought about without the use of medicine or surgery. I was frankly skeptical; and yet those who testified, as well as the other persons present, appeared to be normal, intelligent people.

During the next few years I witnessed a number of healings brought about through the efficacy of Christian Science, but I remained skeptical until a member of my family was raised, through Science help alone, from a dying condition, and in just a few moments was out of bed and performing household duties. After I had witnessed this healing, all doubts concerning the healing power of Christian Science left me, and I began to study it eagerly and earnestly.

One healing I experienced stands out vividly in my memory, for it marked the first time that I ever saw myself as a part of God's perfect creation. Until then, I had tried to think and pray myself out of a material body into a spiritual selfhood. While performing my daily duties, I accidentally splashed some very strong lacquer thinner into my eyes. The pain was intense, and I found that I could not see. Then the fear that I should be permanently blind took hold of me, for it seemed as if my eyes were being literally burned out. In this state of physical pain and mental terror, I groped my way to a corner of the room and began to help myself as best I could. After a few moments, it came to me suddenly that God had formed a perfect creation and that He had created man perfect. So I, as man, must of necessity be perfect, and nothing could destroy any part of my perfect being. Almost immediately the pain left me and I could again see normally.
