Man Cannot Die

Reports on the progress of the war frequently recite that thousands have been killed, and often prophesy that future casualties will be heavy.

The teaching of Christian Science turns thought away from the tragedies of earth to the eternal, indestructible truth of spiritual existence and of man's true being as the expression of God. As such, he coexists with, and is eternally united to, his Maker. These truths provide the sure antidote for grief and separation, and help us understandingly to utilize the forces of God to lessen the horrors of conflict, and increasingly to realize something of the scientific verity that death is never a fact of being, nor man a casualty.

Let us examine, in the light of this Science, the claim that man, one or thousands, can die—that is, be deprived of life. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, records this basic truth (p. 289): "The belief that matter has life results, by the universal law of mortal mind, in a belief in death. So man, tree, and flower are supposed to die; but the fact remains, that God's universe is spiritual and immortal."
