Enlist to Lessen Evil
Many a Christian Scientist, after listening to the daily calls still coming over the radio for nurses and workers to enlist in the war effort, wonders how he can be of more service to his country. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy says (p. 450), "The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death." In the rush and clamor of meeting the material needs for the world, let us not allow our efforts to lag in supplying the very essential spiritual need for lessening "evil, disease, and death."
Prayer is our most powerful weapon, and unlike material weapons it cannot be taken away from us so long as we use it in the cause of righteousness. Trust in God is our only sure hope of safety, since fortifications, foxholes, pillboxes— in fact, every means of protection devised by the human mind—have proved inadequate to protect from injury and death. The only true and lasting solution to the problems of mankind is found through spiritual enlightenment. The basis of our indestructible safety and well-being depends on self-existent and self-sustaining Life, which is God.
Some time ago the President of the United States of America urged everyone to observe Universal Prayer Week, saying, "Without spiritual armor we cannot hope to win this war...be worthy of the victory our men are purchasing at a great cost on the battlefield...we cannot hope to play an honorable and responsible part in the establishment of world peace. Many of our boys who have been in active service write home expressing gratitude for the protective work done by those at home and imploring them not to let down in their efforts to destroy the hidden mental foe to freedom. Very few of them have the time or the place to do much of their own work in quietude. It must often be done under stress of battle and their dependence is on their own relationship to God and His present help. Greatly do they need our prayerful, consecrated and scientific support.
