Inspiration of the Golden Rule

"Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets" (Matt. 7:12). Christ Jesus gave utterance to this exhortation which today we know as the Golden Rule. And for all these years this rule has provided the means of true enrichment. Obeyed, it inculcates a course of conduct in accord with the nature of God, divine Love, the source of all permanent prosperity.

This simple demand is important to the peace of the world, for when practiced by all men it will outlaw strikes, inhumanities, wars. These effects follow because God is the basis of the mode of action prescribed by this ordinance. Christian Science teaches that doing unto others as we would that they should do unto us means thinking of them as children of God. It demands that we turn away from the material senses, which picture them as frail mortals, and discern in Christian Science their true selfhood, wholly spiritual, the expression only of that which is imperishable, perfect, lovely, and good, even of God, divine Love.

This, then, is the reason why Christian Science attaches such great importance to this rule and adherence thereto on our part. Indeed, Mary Baker Eddy incorporates this rule in one of six religious Tenets which are to be found on page 497 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" It reads "And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure."
