That God is a very present help...
That God is a very present help in need was proved to me in 1935, when my severest test came. While driving an automobile I was struck by a fast passenger train with such force that the car was completely demolished, and the friend seated beside me was fatally injured. When I saw the train approaching, and escape seemed impossible, I declared the truth and placed myself in God's care. A clear realization that Life is indestructible, and that God is more powerful than any train, filled my thought. I was taken out of the debris with a lacerated foot and hand. I was moved to a hospital by railroad officials, where little hope was expressed for my recovery. However, I was not affected by this; not once did I doubt or fear. Promptly I got into communication with a Christian Science practitioner, who assured me that all was well.
In four days the doctor dismissed me, stating that the hand, which he had thought would have to be amputated, was evidently healing. In less than a week I was using the hand, answering mail from friends who were concerned about my recovery. The foot was healed even more promptly than my hand.
I have been healed of sick headaches, of fear of storms and of being alone in the house, through declaring and realizing the comforting statements of truth from the Bible: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength," and also Mrs. Eddy's inspired words in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health (p. 471): "Man is, and forever has been, God's reflection. God is infinite, therefore ever present, and there is no other power nor presence."
