Only God Gives Health
It is worthy of note that honest efforts are being put forth in many lands to make more secure the health of their citizens. New legislation to further this intent is pending in the Congress of the United States, in state legislatures, in the British Parliament, and in the Parliaments of certain British Dominions. Under this legislation, a large majority of the people would have medical care and hospitalization provided for them, under a medical board chosen by the government.
Christian Scientists are deeply interested in every sincere effort having as its motive the bettering of the health of mankind. They insist, however—because it is a God-given right—that such steps be so taken as to leave every individual free to utilize, unrestricted and unhampered, the God-appointed spiritual means for gaining health, revealed in the Bible and demonstrated by Christ Jesus.
The proposed legislation shows that in the thinking of human society there is appearing a quickened sense of the fact that we all have an obligation to help make life more livable for one another, and that health is something to which every individual is entitled. We agree, however, with Dr. Morris Fishbein of the American Medical Association that disease cannot be legislated out of existence. Health, Christian Science makes plain, is permanently had only when men find its source in the Life and Mind that is God, and become willing to express in their consciousness the health-giving and health-maintaining thoughts this Mind imparts to its expression, man. The fact as to where health lies is clearly stated by Mary Baker Eddy thus (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 298): "The true consciousness is the true health."
