Although I was brought up in...

Although I was brought up in Christian Science, I did not realize its great healing power until I entered the armed services.

While I was undergoing flight training, my airplane crashed at a high speed. I was thrown from the plane and found myself lying in gasoline from the punctured tank in front of a wing. There was no fire, and I was able to think fairly well, although I could not see with one eye and one of my arms was broken. I repeated ' the scientific statement of being," found on page 468 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and the Daily Prayer from The Mother Church Manual (Art. VIII, Sect. 4), also by Mrs. Eddy. In addition, I declared that God's child cannot be harmed, for he is spiritual, not material. Soon I was reached and taken to a naval hospital, despite my protests, for I wished instead to be taken where I could receive Christian Science treatment.

At the hospital I found the Christian Science Wartime Minister waiting for me. When the chaplain had been informed of my crash, the Wartime Minister was also present. He immediately started to work for me in Christian Science, and went to the hospital to await my arrival.
