The Voice of God

Modern inventions, radio and talking pictures, have greatly increased the possibilities and the influence of the voice in human affairs. It has been broadcast and rebroadcast by these means until it seems that a never-ending stream of news, admonition, and propaganda of all kinds is being disseminated. A significant development bearing on the present time is that the human voice is carried past defenses set up by guns, ships, and planes so that the spoken word brings messages of truth and hope to peoples under the yoke of bondage—a potent factor in breaking up tyranny.

Unfortunately, however, what should be an instrument only for good is also capable of being used for evil purposes. Isaiah pointed out the remedy for this state of affairs when he asked, "Should not a people seek unto their God?" Many thinking people are turning today from the confusion of human opinions and seeking counsel of God, Truth. This counsel they can hear, for Mrs. Eddy has written in her textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 559), "The inaudible voice of Truth is, to the human mind, 'as when a lion roareth.' "

It is recorded in I Kings that Elijah was told to "go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord." And there he learned to reject the confusion represented in the storm and the earthquake, and to hear the "still small voice." There are a number of other instances related in Scripture of prophets and apostles listening to the voice of God.
