For some time I have wanted...
For some time I have wanted to express gratitude through the periodicals to Christ Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy, the beloved Leader and Founder of the Christian Science church, for all the activities, publications, and blessings this religion of Truth has brought to me and mine.
The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, had been in our home since 1907. But it was read only occasionally by my parents, both of whom belonged to an orthodox church. In 1938, "man's extremity" became "God's opportunity," and I sought help in Christian Science. During a period of several months I had consulted several physicians and chiropractors, and each had told me I was suffering from a complete nervous collapse due to grief and overstrain in taking part in the settling of difficult business matters. This had caused serious eye and muscle trouble, which necessitated the wearing of glasses, inability to drive a car long nights of fear and mental depression, and constant headaches.
When the fall term of school began I was no better, but having myself and my young daughter to support, I had to continue teaching, and also finish work at the university two days a week. Finally one Sabbath afternoon in October I felt I could not go on. I called a Christian Science practitioner whom I had met socially through a friend. Within a short time she was in my home, listening to my tale of many woes. Then she suddenly awoke me from my Adam-dream with these words: "Do you think the doctors and chiropractors know more than God knows?" I had to answer truthfully. "No." From that time on no thought of material remedy or manipulation has ever tempted me, for I know that Truth can be applied to my every need.
