Postwar Security

Leaders in government and industry are planning for postwar employment and activity. We are told, and rightly, that now is the time to formulate methods by which we may protect ourselves against business slumps which often follow a major war.

As Christian Scientists, now indeed is the time when we must protect ourselves against the error of believing that there can ever be a slackening in rightful employment. Also now is the time when we must realize that the rush and pressure of present-day employment are no more a reality than was the scarcity of work a decade ago. Both are the objectification of the belief of mortal mind that there can be too much or too little of anything. We must assure ourselves of security by learning that man is never separated from God and His abundance. If our thinking is sufficiently at one with God's allness we shall not fail to demonstrate activity, sufficiency, and security.

On page 405 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says, "The pains of sinful sense are less harmful than its pleasures." Today many have better positions and are earning more money than ever before. Are we making sure that this plenty has not lulled us into a false security in material things? Are we taking our affairs into the realm of Spirit? Are we sure that our present understanding of affluence is the result of knowing God as all substance? If we are, we have proved to ourselves that there is no lack in Mind, and also that there is no burdensome surplus. If so, then we have made our plans for postwar security.

Those in the armed forces who are wondering about security upon their return to civilian life must also face the problem in the light of Truth. It does not matter whether the human belief is one of plenty or one of lack; we must abide in the realm of Spirit if we would be assured of unchangeable good. There has never been, nor can there ever be any change in God's plan for man in the first chapter of Genesis we are told that His work was complete when He gave man dominion over everything, and in that creation no change was ever made. Only after mortal mind began to offer its false arguments as set forth in the second chapter of Genesis, do we find a suggestion of change. But this was experienced in the Adam-dream. Of the man whom God made in His image and likeness— the spiritual man—there is no record of change.

Rightful employment is as available to us as is the ability to think, and the work of spiritual man is to reflect his Father. If we keep our thoughts filled with the goodness and abundance of God, there can be no opportunity for mortal mind to inject its subtle arguments of lack of any kind. If we use every available opportunity to seek to understand the spiritual significance of our daily activities, we shall find that we are engaged in the work of reflecting God.

It does not matter whether mortal mind says there is a lack of employees or a lack of employment whether it claims there is an overabundance of work or a dearth of it provided we are knowing that we are never separated from God, and that He does not over-supply or undersupply us with anything, and that we have therefore nothing to fear from the pictures it may conjure up for us. Our human experience will shape itself around our mode of thought.

The strides forward which have been made in material science since the infinite nature of Mind was revealed by our beloved Leader, are amazing. We have had radio, aviation, and electrical developments which are nothing short of miraculous: and yet we are but at the beginning of such discoveries. Christian Science has greatly helped to free universal thought. Therefore it is only reasonable to expect that as its truths are more widely accepted and demonstrated fear of lack of opportunity and supply will proportionately lessen.

Each Christian Scientist knows that God's man is forever in his rightful place; that he is amply supplied, regardless of material evidence to the contrary. The understanding of God's provision for man is the basis from which we must do our part in assuring the world of postwar activity and employment.

Goodness, decency, and truth have a survival value that is amazing. Long after lies have run their course, truth comes to the surface and goes on its way in triumph.... Long after malice has done its worst, goodness comes from the tomb and goes on its beautiful way.
