I wish to express gratitude to...
I wish to express gratitude to God for the teachings of Christian Science, because ever since I was a little girl it has been proved to me by demonstration that God— Life, Truth, Love—is the only reality.
In 1912. the physician who was earnestly trying to help my mother told my father that he had done everything humanly possible, and that the end was only a few months away. Her illness had been diagnosed as tuberculosis of the intestines. For several years my mother had also been subject to spells of unconsciousness, and the attending physician said he knew of no case exactly like it. When these spells occurred, her body would twist and writhe, and her feet and head would be drawn back until they almost touched. My father, a cattleman in the Rocky Mountains of New Mexico, when advised that my mother would not live long, sent to the State Normal School for a governess to come to our ranch to teach my sister and me. He did not want to send us to town to school, for my mother desired to keep us with her until the end.
This particular night, as was my custom, I knelt beside my bed to ask God what we should do, and to bless and keep us all. My heart was heavy, as I closed my eyes to pray. Always before while praying, in my imagination an enlarged man who was sitting beyond two enormous clouds would rise and come to stand with one foot on each cloud, and stooping over us, would listen to what I had to say. This night I closed my eyes, but my god did not appear. I had lost him! I kept closing my eyes again and again, searching for something to pray to without results. In consternation and fear I cried aloud: "Dear God, where are You? What are You! Why can't I find You? Whatever You are and wherever You are, please send us a light." After that I felt a wonderful sense of peace, and fell asleep.
