Yes, These Things Are True

As you came into our Wednesday evening meeting we knew that you were a stranger. We could not help noting your wonderment as you listened to the testimonies of the healing of error and discord, of unhappiness and failure, and we could see your question taking form, "Can these things be true?" We wanted to answer lovingly across the intervening pews, "Yes, these things are true."

These healings you heard about are the effects of understanding God in Christian Science. As Christian Scientists we love and study the Scriptures. In fact, the first of the six tenets of Christian Science, to be found on page 497 of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, reads, "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal life." This refers to the King James Version of the Bible used in Protestant churches.

From earliest times people have wondered at and sought to explain evidences of the presence of God, with power, among them. When the people thronged Jesus of Nazareth as he went his healing rounds in Galilee, they were expecting the Christ, the Messiah of Old Testament prophecy, yet they wondered as they saw the sick healed, the insane restored, and the dead raised. They did not fully comprehend that these healings bore witness of the Christ they were looking for, the Principle of perfect being.
