The Recipe

[Of Special Interest to Children]

It was spring vacation, and it was raining. For three days it had been raining intermittently. Tommy, who is an active boy in the fourth grade, had kept himself busy with a number of things, such as running trains, building model airplanes, going to the movies, reading, and drawing. Finally, on the third day, Tommy decided that he would like to make a cake all by himself. As he began to think about cakemaking he quickly realized that he did not even know how to begin, so he asked his mother what to do.

Tommy's mother was happy to show him how to make a cake. She knew that in this way he could learn some useful lessons.

"First of all you must have a recipe to go by," she told him, "and you will find the recipe in the big blue cookbook."
