I have read with interest the article appearing in a recent issue of Le Jour, commenting on a book entitled "Canada Today and Tomorrow." I shall appreciate your kindly giving me space for a short reply, since your readers were left with an erroneous concept of Christian Science teaching. Your correspondent's conclusions evidently have been arrived at from the testimony given by a young man before Chief Justice Gustave Perrault to the effect that the teachings of Christian Science prohibit anyone from enlisting in the armed forces and from swearing an oath on the Bible.

May I point out that the young man's statements are not in accordance with the teachings of Christian Science. There is nothing in Christian Science which could be interpreted as prohibiting anyone from enlisting in the Army or swearing an oath on the Bible. On the contrary, students of this Science enlist and give readily their services for the defense of their country whenever it is attacked, as witnessed in the last Great War and in the present struggle for the preservation of democracy and freedom. There are large numbers of Christian Scientists serving today on land, in the air, and on the seas, and they are giving a good account of themselves in matters of discipline, self-denial, and devotion to duty. Wherever his country needs him, the Christian Scientist willingly and fearlessly faces dangers and hardships, some of these young students of Christian Science having already been mentioned for special bravery and devotion to duty, even to the point of giving their own human sense of life in order to save a friend.
