This testimony of my first healing...

This testimony of my first healing in Christian Science, the healing of fear during the first World War is offered with deepest humility and gratitude.

My eldest son was called into the service, and after only eighteen days in an army camp sailed for France. Fearful that he would not return, I was filled with bitterness and resentment. My small knowledge of Christian Science had come through a friend who, after years of suffering, had been healed of asthma through Christian Science. In 1911, knowing that I was very worldly and very unhappy, she urged me to buy the textbook. Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. I am sorry to say that the book lay on the shelf until 1918, when I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

My son, who was the idol of my heart, had been away for two years. In desperation I went to a Christian Science friend, who gave me the comfort I had been seeking, saying: "He is the child of God so belongs to God. Put him in God's hands and He will take care of him." All the way home that "still small voice" kept saying, "Put him in God's hands." That night I had my first peaceful rest in months. I awoke in the morning in perfect peace, on the mountaintop. Not a material condition had changed. My son was still in France, but the "peace of God, which passeth all understanding," had destroyed all my fear. I had to come down into the valley and prove many things, however, but through faithful study of the Bible and Science and Health I never lost my faith in God. The journey Spiritward has been slow, and as yet I have but touched the hem of Christ's robe; nevertheless, I am grateful for every experience in Christian Science, and for the daily unfoldment of God's law.
