Authorized Statement on Christian Science by Committee on Publication

William Reid Johnson, Committee on Publication for Oklahoma Alva Review -Courier

The Master said, "And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled." How can we avoid being troubled as we look upon a world torn with strife and commotion? Jesus' command, "See that ye be not troubled," was not given until after his students had received ample instruction in the art of Christian living. Today these same teachings, if adhered to, will carry us through any trying time with our joy undiminished and our outlook unshaken.

Jesus never recommended that we climb into an ivory tower of seclusion and turn our back upon the woes of the world with indifference. Such a negative reaction is not in accord with his words or deeds. He did more for the world than anyone has ever done, and he plainly asked those who acknowledged him as the Way-shower to follow his example in word and deed. We cannot do these things by merely subscribing to the letter of conventional creeds or by the careful preservation of customary rituals. He who is fortifying himself against temptation, arming himself for spiritual warfare, learning patience under tribulation, and courage in the face of evil, can, with Christian joy and serenity, give civilization the kind of practical support it needs.

It is related in Luke's Gospel that the seventy, whom the Master sent forth to prove what practical help Christianity is to mankind, "returned again with joy." The various trying problems they had faced did not take away their joy, for their conduct attested that Christliness which finds happy expression in good deeds.

Since the Christian of today has his foundation rooted in the same eternal truths taught by Christ Jesus, it is no wonder the Rev. Dr. Talmage could say, "There are wit, humor, and enduring vivacity among God's people."

Kindliness one to the other plays a great part in human relations. The kindly thought, the kindly action, how greatly they help in smoothing the asperities of life, in preventing enmities and bitter feelings! It is the Christian way, the way of life in doing our duty to our neighbor, which is a duty to fellow man, ranking with duty to God.
