True Giving

Never in the history of the world has the need for love and unselfishness been greater than it is today. Thousands of human beings seem, for the present, to be bereft of homes and the simplest necessities of human life. To them their plight may seem desperate indeed. Those who know nothing of God as everpresent Principle, the substance which will meet their every human need, may seem for a time to be separated, by their own acceptance of false belief, from the very benefits which are at hand. Where, then, may these weary ones turn except to God the source of true wealth, the wealth of spiritual understanding?

Christian Science is teaching us to look away from the material world to the perfect creation of God, Spirit, Mind, Life, Truth, Love, which is ever at peace, existing in perfect harmony. However transcendental this fact may seem to the unenlightened human thought. Christian Science shows it to be the invincible, practical truth; and it is the sacred obligation of every Christian Scientist to hold to this fact, not only claiming it in his own experience, but knowing that it is true for all mankind. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 518), "The rich in spirit help the poor in one grand brotherhood, all having the same Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth his brother's need and supplieth it seeking his own in another's good."

While we, as Christian Scientists may see that the world's great need is for spiritual understanding, nevertheless we must not forget the necessity of meeting the human need as well. Jesus left us his wise example in feeding the hungry multitude. He not only fed them spiritually by his teaching; he also saw their human need and supplied it, leaving the invincible proof of Principle's ever-presence and practical ability to meet every human requirement. In feeding the multitude Jesus took advantage of a great opportunity to glorify God through proving His abundance in practical application.
