The Supreme Ruler
Human subjection will be at an end when men understand the source and meaning of power as Christ Jesus did. Standing before Pilate he declared, "Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above."
As long as mortal motives, opinions, wills, and desires sway men, they will be afraid. Shakespeare speaks of "the uncertain sickly appetite to please." This is the temptation which besets men domestically, socially, politically; in public and private relationships. It is this that would persuade them to act in ways that are contrary to Principle; in ways which expediency but not moral integrity, advises.
On page 407 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes, "Man's enslavement to the most relentless masters—passion, selfishness, envy, hatred, and revenge —is conquered only by a mighty struggle." Men may dismiss this warning by thinking that it applies only to extreme cases; but any departure from moral courage from strict honesty of thought and action, is a form of enslavement, and he who yields but little finds himself involved in that which will continue to demand more and more submission.
