The Spiritual Foundation of Fellowship

In a changing material world, where reason and liberty are in some quarters weakened and hindered by the imposition of racial or national theories, it is borne in on us that when hostilities cease we shall be of necessity on the threshold of moral rehabilitation and reconstruction. Already discussions are taking place on the subject, but it is evident that these vast problems can be met only by a reasoned and sympathetic settlement based upon a heavenly basis rather than upon merely material values or human logic.

Christian Scientists are therefore called upon to uphold in their thoughts and work the true spiritual idea which leads to effective restoration of "the years that the locust hath eaten." Reliance on human reason has failed. To banish war, fear, hatred, intense and selfish nationalism, it is necessary to abolish the false beliefs that foster these things. They are abnormal conditions of thought. Warfare is not the true way of settling differences. The pursuit of a tolerable life for mankind must be seen to have greater incentive and purpose than appeals to purely racial and national interests. The unhappy picture of the vast wealth, energies, and skill now being devoted to destruction instead of construction is a call for greater consecration to Truth, and a swifter spreading of the truth which alone can heal the world. Christian Science, revealing that God is Spirit and His universe spiritual, acting as leaven in the human consciousness, will eventually solve all problems.

The Bible is a record of spiritual development throughout the ages. The history of mankind, its motives and their results, seen in perspective over many hundreds of years, is an encouraging study in the light of the events of our own generation. It is seen that progress has not been steady. Periods of advance have been followed by apparent periods of set back.
