As a child I was permitted...
As a child I was permitted to attend any Sunday school I chose, but trained to doubt what was taught. As a result, I found it difficult to overcome a feeling of antagonism toward religion in any form. About ten years ago my husband and I were spending a sabbatical leave in a town in the West. I had forgotten to take with me some medicine which I had used for several years for chronic attacks of something similar to acute indigestion. One night I suddenly became very ill and suffered acutely until almost noon the next day, when I asked my husband to telephone a Christian Science practitioner, whose name had been mentioned to me frequently by a friend. My husband, who had been interested in Christian Science for some time, agreed to do this, since neither of us knew what doctor to get.
The practitioner came and sat by my bed. He asked me to read the first page of the chapter on Prayer in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I said I would. After a few minutes the pain ceased instantly! I was then able to do the reading I had been asked to do and, in a few hours, I was up and doing my work. After previous attacks, I had had to stay in bed for several days to recover my strength. At that time I had almost no appreciation or understanding of what had been done for me, but I now know that it was that instantaneous and permanent healing which broke down my antagonism toward religion and made it possible for me, later on, to study Christian Science.
The next year, back in our home town, our young son started to school. A series of colds led to a serious ear trouble, which two specialists feared might be something "worse than mastoiditis," and which would necessitate a very serious operation. As a temporary measure, the ear was punctured, but no hope was held out that this would give relief. Desperate, we again turned to Christian Science and telephoned a practitioner. My husband and I remained up almost all night, reading passages which the practitioner had recommended from the Bible and Science and Health. Toward morning we found our son sleeping normally. When he awoke he was completely recovered. We decided that henceforth we would place our faith in Christian Science, and we began to attend church and study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly.
