Sophistication
[Of Special Interest to Youth]
Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p.213), "Christian Science gives a fearless wing and firm foundation." Realization of the truth of this statement gave a young student of a Christian Science Sunday School freedom and strength whereby she was healed of a severe case of misplaced ambition. It had been her desire that she might supervise, conduct, or take active part in nearly every activity or association the high school which she attended had to offer. Likewise, in her scholastic studies, she earnestly endeavored to maintain honor grades throughout each semester. When she was graduated from this school, she received the highest honor for achievement, a gold award. It was some time later, however, before the student realized that there was something of which she needed to be healed.
Upon leaving senior high school and entering the business world, she found that no longer could she lean upon just her own achievement no longer were security, happiness assured through intellectuality or social prominence. Indeed, it was at this time that she learned to turn to God, and the love and enlightenment which she had received in the Christian Science Sunday School for almost sixteen years came surging into her consciousness. When the truth was actually accepted, the healing of a nervous breakdown was complete.
Self-righteousness, pride, self-justification, and many other unlovely traits of character were broken down, and with this gradual purification and liberation came harmonious working conditions and lasting friendships. Such an experience is but a small example of what students in Christian Science Sunday Schools all over the world are daily proving that with an understanding of God, divine Love, they can enter any walk of life with courage. They can face any temptation with firm reliance on Principle!
The world urges on mankind sophistication, worldly wisdom, and human pleasures. To be sophisticated, in the modern sense of the term, is to "know the answers," to reason cleverly, to be wordly-wise. This kind od education originated in Greece, where a Sophist was known as one who practiced adroit but specious reasoning, and today it sometimes claims a place in young people's lives in the glorification of self, in cynicism, and false indulgences.
It therefore becomes imperative for the young to search their hearts to know what they express, and what true living is.
In the Sunday school these young people are taught how to reason, how to cling to the true idea of Life and man, how to relinquish the false, and how to live and truly love. The admonition in Romans, "Be not conformed to this world," does not imply condemnation of the actions, amusements, or appetites of others, which would only indicate self-righteousness and self-justification, but rather does it command one to rise in the recognition of God's righteousness—healing us, cleansing us, and attracting others towards good.
In proportion, therefore, as the young student of Christian Science lives and demonstrates the truth of true individuality, he or she will not influence or be influenced erroneously by any personality. In the measure that he sees the omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience of divine Mind, and his oneness therewith, will he express increasing wisdom, right reasoning, harmonious control.
As he fully realizes that all genuine pleasure is derived reflecting God and the inspiration of daily demonstration, will he experience right human relationships and happifying associations. Once this spiritual fact had been scientifically proved, inability to cope with problems and temptations is removed.
The young Scientist soon realizes the source of all intelligence, poise, and true attractiveness he or she expresses to be Spirit, and with gratitude for the development of these spiritual qualities come a fervent desire for a better understanding of the Bible, a more loving thought toward one's fellow man, and a deeper appreciation of God. Christian Science is the law of God, divine Principle, and therefore in basing its reasoning thereon, shows clearly that all enduring rewards are wholly spiritual, forever attainable, always desirable, continually right. It also teaches that gaining a spiritual sense of reasoning and pleasure is not giving up desired activity or losing valued friendships. There is no such thing as good sophistication; but there is now at hand the greatest opportunity, the most pleasurable experience—acquiring poise and true knowledge through the consciousness of man as of and in God, not in matter; achieving success through the expression of divine Mind, not selfish human will.
