Church Notes

Brockton, Massachusetts (First Church).—While the cornerstone for the present lovely edifice was laid about twelve years ago, the services on Sunday, June 14, 1942, held in accordance with the usual custom of all Christian Science churches, were regarded as dedication services and indicate that the church building is now debt free.

The First Reader gave a brief history of the Christian Science movement in Brockton. This follows, in part:

"The first meetings were held during September, 1897. The state charter was obtained in 1898. Sunday school sessions were begun in July, 1898. The first public lecture was given in December, 1898, in Massasoit Hall. A free public Reading Room was opened in Elks' Hall during 1899.

"The early meetings and services were held in various halls until, in 1906, the well-known estate at 30 North Main Street was acquired and remodeled for church purposes.

"This building was used until 1929, when the present edifice was erected to better accommodate the increasing needs of the organization. The cornerstone was laid in November, 1929, and the first service in the new church was held on Sunday, September 14, 1930. Every seat was occupied."
