It is with an ever-recurring...
It is with an ever-recurring sense of deep gratitude that I recall several definite instances of protection afforded me through my study of Christian Science in the early months of the first World War. I had known of this wonderful revelation of Truth only a short time, and it is with the hope that these experiences may help others in the present conflict of mortal mind that I relate them.
In February of 1918, while I was serving with the Rainbow Division in France, the company in which I was a first lieutenant received orders to occupy a certain sector in the front line. While proceeding across an open field on a reconnaisance mission to reach our position, through an intermittent artillery fire from the enemy which covered our approach, each officer was forced to cross singly as best he could between shell bursts. The first officer to go was struck, and had to be hospitalized at once, and being the next in line to go I proceeded prayerfully, trusting to divine protection, and reached the trenches unharmed.
After being in the front line for only a few days, we received a communication to prepare for a severe gas attack, which was expected shortly. While awaiting the attack, I read and studied a wonderful article in a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel, which I had just received from my wife. I was so helped by this article, and my thoughts were so uplifted, that I was not at all surprised the attack never came.
