It has long been my desire to...
It has long been my desire to express gratitude through the periodicals for the many blessings I have experienced through the study and application of Christian Science.
When this Science was first presented to me, more than thirty years ago, I was suffering from a stomach disorder which I had had from my boyhood days. I had tried several physicians, but received little help. Finally, I was asked to try Christian Science, but I was at first reluctant to do so. I seemed to have a great fear that if I took up Christian Science and visited a Christian Science practitioner, I should immediately have to give up several habits that seemed very pleasant to me. I had worked for a number of years in a liquor store and had developed a strong desire for intoxicating drinks. I was afraid that if I visited a Christian Science practitioner she would ask me to sign a pledge not to take any strong drinks, and I felt quite sure that I could not keep such a pledge.
When I told the practitioner that I did not want to give up any of these material pleasures, she informed me that I did not have to give up anything, but that if I would earnestly study Christian Science the desire for strong drink and tobacco would give me up. Since I knew almost nothing of Christian Science, this sounded ridiculous to me. I asked for treatment, however, and experienced an instantaneous healing of the stomach disorder. I began immediately to read and study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy. The result of my sincere study was that the appetite for liquor and tobacco left me in the first year. I am happy to say that there has been no return of the desire to drink or smoke in all these thirty years.
