Traveling as we do today on...
Traveling as we do today on streamlined trains across the country in record time, we do not have the opportunity to see the mileposts along the way, as we formerly did when traveling with less speed. The engineer, however, knows the speed and the route we are traveling, and we arrive safely at our destination. In our journey from sense to Soul, God is guiding our every step along the way.
Before taking up the study of Christian Science, while on a trip to the mountains, I had what is called oak poisoning and was ill for about three months, in a hospital part of the time and totally blind for about ten days. Some time after that I was asked to take a trip to the northern part of the state and was told before arriving at my destination that the woods where I was going were full of poison oak. Thinking of my former experience, I immediately declared that eyes are "spiritual discernment" (see Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 586), and that therefore I could see only good. Needless to say, I had no ill effects from the poison oak.
Some years ago while I was riding in a car with four others, our car was struck by another car with such force that we were all thrown through the top. The car was completely demolished. I was severely injured because I was on the side that was hit by the oncoming car. Instantly I declared: "God is my Life," and the next I knew I was on my feet. I asked to be taken home immediately. This occurred at one of the busy intersections of a large city and hundreds had gathered round. From the crowd a gentleman volunteered to take me home, and before we had gone two blocks the police ambulance passed us going to the scene. I was protected by not having to submit to the usual routine. Many bones appeared to be misplaced; however, I did not voice this to those around me. About midnight I talked to a practitioner, who was out of the city at the time. I asked a friend to read to me, which she did until about six o'clock in the morning, when I was entirely free from pain.
