The Good Fight of Faith

Question:

Must I still love when all the hosts of hate
Assail what more than life I hold as dear,
In furious onslaught surging at the gate,
Loosing their venomed shafts of sin and fear;

Shall I not strive with all my might and main
To stem the tide that threatens to destroy,
Meet hate with fiercer hate, until again
The sons of men may dwell in peace and joy?
