Among the Churches

Current Notes

Montclair, New Jersey (First Church).—First Church of Christ, Scientist, Montclair, dedicated its edifice at 8 Hillside Avenue on Sunday, May 17, 1942. Although the building had been occupied by the church body since September, 1926, it was not dedicated before in accordance with a provision that Christian Science churches can be dedicated only when all indebtedness has been canceled. Services were held in the morning, afternoon, and evening. The subject of the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly was "Mortals and Immortals." A history of the church, read by the First Reader, follows in part:

"The first Christian Science services in this town were held in 1898 by a small group at a home in Upper Montclair. This group became a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1900.

"Meetings were conducted in a conveniently located hall, and later in Unity Hall at Montclair Center. Continued growth necessitated a larger building, and the Baptist Church on Fullerton Avenue was purchased in 1911 and dedicated in 1917.
