I am most grateful to God and to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for Christian Science and for our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which she gave to the world.
I should like to relate my first healing, which is an inspiration to me whenever I am reminded of it, although it occurred many years ago. I inadvertently jumped from a very high fence onto a board with a spike in it, and the spike extended entirely through my foot. After the spike had been removed I was carried to the house, and the foot was washed and bandaged, a piece of black stocking being removed from the wound. I was told to take our textbook and read "the scientific statement of being" (p. 468). I complied, and my mother gave me a Christian Science treatment, although she was a very young student of Science. In a few hours I walked up town and back, and the next day I attended a picnic and competed in all the activities, such as racing, jumping, and swimming. I had been completely healed.
I have also been healed of appendicitis, severe burns, stomach disorder, melancholia, fear of storms, and many other fears of mortal mind. However, I am more grateful for the spiritual understanding of God, made practical in my daily life, and the progressiveness and inspiration made possible through the avenues established by our Leader. I have been blessed with the privilege of attending a Christian Science Sunday School, and with membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church; all three activities have been of inestimable value. The blessing of class instruction came to me during the so-called depression, proving, in the words of our Hymnal (No. 224),
