Key West Citizen
A recent issue of your paper contains an interesting account of a religious service held in your city, wherein a minister said, "Divine healing is no strange, new thing, but is a Bible truth as old as the hills." The minister also said, as recorded in your paper, "Divine healing is not the mind-healing of Christian Science."
One of the terms used in Christian Science to define God is Mind. It is an understanding of Mind, God, which reforms the sinner and heals the sick. Healings in Christian Science result from prayer, and from an understanding of God's spiritual law. In speaking of this law, Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Christian Science is not something apart from the works of Jesus; it is the epitome of them. Christ Jesus taught no mere theory about God. He proved his words by his works.
It is true that divine healing is no new thing. In speaking of his mission Christ Jesus said, "I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me," and he devoted his life to the preaching of the gospel and the healing of sin and disease among the people. Jesus left this command to his followers: "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also," and it is encouraging to know that some of his followers are obeying his command to heal the sick as well as reform the sinner. Christian healing is a true sign of "Immanuel," or "God with us." It is primafacie evidence of God's love and care for His children. On page 1 of the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, are to be found these words: "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." And on page 231 of this book she writes, "If God heals not the sick, they are not healed, for no lesser power equals the infinite All-power; but God, Truth, Life, Love, does heal the sick through the prayer of the righteous."
