For more than twenty years Christian Science has been my only comforter, guide, and physician. I did not take up its study, however, in expectation that it had any truth in it or that it would heal me.

From the time I was thirteen years old I had been convinced that either there was no God or that He was very remote. Believing the body to be a machine, I dieted it, exercised it, and dosed it with medicines. Under this regimen I became ill. Then I grew worse, and my life was despaired of.

At this point, as a favor to a friend, I began to read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Three weeks later, when I was about three quarters of the way through the book, I realized that here at last was the truth for which I had been searching—that all is one vast unity, not the unity of matter, as I had believed, but the unity of Truth, Spirit, Love.
