[Original testimony in German]

In the Preface to the Christian Science textbook,...

In the Preface to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings."

I have had occasion to experience the truth of these words. In the year 1930, because of consumption, I had to go to a sanatorium. The head doctor declared my illness incurable. At that time I was acquainted with Christian Science, but could not yet apply it successfully, for my fear of the dread disease was too great. A dear practitioner explained the healing truth to me with great patience, and by her loving aid some symptoms were overcome, such as hemorrhages of the lungs and laryngitis. I did not do my necessary work, however, and did not gain complete liberation. I was happy and peaceful when I knew that work was being done for me in Christian Science, but I did not yet know, nor did I seek to know, what it means to rely entirely "on the sustaining infinite." Every time things went well with me again I was grateful to the practitioner for having worked for me so lovingly. Though at times, in my thinking, I deserted God, He never deserted me. The all-knowing, all-seeing, and all-loving cared for me. He was indeed my Shepherd.

In spite of the long stay at the sanatorium, the condition of my lungs remained the same. When I was at last dismissed, upon my insistent request, the doctor remarked, after warning me of many things I must not do, that soon I should have to return to the sanatorium. As by a miracle, I found employment with Christian Scientists. In the beginning the complaint was so troublesome that I feared I should succumb to it. But I was supported by the good which I had grasped, and explanations were untiringly given me of what Christian Science is and what God, our loving Father-Mother, can do for all His children. My attention was also often called to the fact that God's work is done, and that it is good.
