In 1938-39, while I was traveling on business in Asia, a hernia evidenced itself in my left side. I endeavored to know the truth about the real man in God's image and likeness, as we are taught in Christian Science, but the pain persisted. The condition grew progressively worse until, on my arrival in India, it seriously interfered with my business engagements, and responsibility to my employer required a medical examination. An operation was recommended, but I firmly rejected this suggestion, and before my departure I requested help from a local Christian Science practitioner. He lovingly pointed out that I should hold strongly to the thought that the only operation needed was "the operation of divine Principle" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Pref.. p. xi). I am grateful to say that relief from the pain was obtained within a few days. I later communicated the situation to a practitioner in the United States and asked that protective work be undertaken for me during the ensuing months.
Unfortunately. I reached the Philippines before the practitioner had received my letter, and the pain again manifested itself. Shortly thereafter, my immediate superior in the company. observing my condition, insisted that I have another medical examination. This time mortal mind argued that traveling had aggravated the hernia condition, and an operalion was deemed imperative. I instantly denounced mentally this continued suggestion that I must be bound with medical laws, and absolutely refused to enter a hospital and submit to an operation, though I agreed to wear a truss pending my return to the United States. I communicated these new developments to the practitioner at home, from whom I received several loving and helpful letters.
It now came to me that I must take a firm stand against all mortal mind laws that were attempting to govern me. I prayed to God for strength and greater spiritual understanding, and received my answer. The truss, which had become extremely uncomfortable, was discarded and, knowing that I could rely on God, I sailed for the United States. En route I studied earnestly the Bible, together with Science and Health and other of our Leader's writings, with the calm conviction and understanding that I could safely leave all to God and "the operation of divine Principle."
