Bible Notes

"Your threshing shall reach unto I lie vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time" (Lev. 26:5)—The thought of lavish abundance is clearly expressed here. The crops were to be so abundant that the threshing of the grain harvested would continue until the grapes were ripe, while the gathering and pressing of the grapes would be carried on until the beginning of a new agricultural cycle—"the sowing time."

"I will rid evil beasts out of the land" (Lev. 26:6)—Smith suggests: "I will clear the land of wild beasts;" while the Septuagint had: "I will destroy the evil beasts out of your land."

"Ye shall eat old store, and bring forth the old because of the new" (Lev. 26:10)—The sense of the original appears to be that their harvests would be so abundant (verses 5 and 9) that before the previous crop, the "old store," had been used up, it would have to be cleared out of the granaries in order to make way for the new. Moffatt translates: "You shall eat what has been stored for long; you shall have to clear out the old to make room for new supplies."
