"Rising to the light"

OUR beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in a Message to The Mother Church, gave us these prophetic words (Christian Science versus Pantheism, p. 13): "Sooner or later all shall know Him, recognize the great truth that Spirit is infinite, and find life in Him in whom we do 'live, and move, and have our being'—life in Life, all in All. Then shall all nations, peoples, and tongues, in the words of St. Paul, have 'one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.' (Ephesians iv. 6.)"

While, to human sense, the present hour in the world's history seems dark indeed, and thinking men and women everywhere are pondering the meaning of these times, Christian Science enables us to see beyond the shadows, to visualize the happy day when our beloved Leader's prophetic utterance will find its ultimate fulfillment, and to find comfort in the realization that hope and faith and courage are not in vain. Christian Scientists have a great work to do in helping to hold high the banner of Truth, encouraging those who are prone to look upon the dark side, through fear, and to accept the suggestion that in these latter days the forces of righteousness seem unable to cope with the subtle workings of evil and with the aggressions of tyrannical governments.

The teachings of the Master, Christ Jesus, as to the self-destructive nature of evil and the omnipotence and supremacy of the one God, are set forth clearly in the Gospel records. He foretold the great upheavals or chemicalization that would accompany the overturning of error. Instead of becoming bewildered and overwhelmed by such evidences, however, his followers were to heed his comforting direction: "See that ye be not troubled. . . . When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, . . . flee into the mountains." Christian Science makes clear what is meant by fleeing to the mountains. It is to rise above and beyond the mists of mortal mind and its wicked machinations, to understand their unreality; it is to lift one's thought into the realm of divine reality and behold good alone as comprising God's perfect creation. In the sunlight of Soul, above the clouds of error, is revealed the divine ever-presence, the spiritual reality of being.
