Bible Notes

"And God said, Let us make man in our image" (Gen. 1:26)—The Hebrew word "Elohim," here rendered "God," is really a plural form, as suggested by the words "us" and "our." Scholars offer various explanations of this plural name for Deity, some considering it as a "plural of majesty"—since a king often uses the royal "we" even today; while others view it as implying fullness, or the fatherhood and motherhood of God.

"Let them have dominion . . . over the cattle" (Gen 1:26)—"Cattle" is not, of course, used here in the customary limited sense meaning "cows," but represents a Hebrew term designating "animals" or "beasts" of all kinds. When our Authorized Version was prepared, the word "cattle" generally had this sense. Compare also Genesis 3:14, where the same term is used in its wide sense.
