One day I picked up a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and started to read it. I knew nothing of Christian Science or its textbook, but all my life I had read every book within reach, and I approached this one with the same interest I should have taken in any new book. Very few pages had been turned before I realized that here was the fulfillment of an unformed desire to know God. Up to that time my life had been easy. I had all I needed for material comfort and happiness, yet often, even though happy, I felt that man's existence was aimless, without reason of any kind, and that there did not exist a concept of God that I could accept. And now within half an hour I had found God, who is Principle, who governs with intelligence, and whom everyone may know and understand.

Several weeks went by before I thought of the physical healing available through the study of this Science. One Sunday morning I awoke with a high fever and all the symptoms of grippe. Even then it did not occur to me to use Christian Science until I remembered that I had planned to leave on Tuesday morning for a four-hundred-mile trip. This would have been impossible under ordinary circumstances, and I realized that here was an opportunity to see what Christian Science could do. A practitioner was called, and when I awoke from a nap in the late afternoon all fever and sickness had left, although I felt very weak. The next morning I was entirely well, and in the afternoon called on the practitioner to introduce myself and thank her for her loving help. Tuesday morning I started my trip, driving most of the way in a blizzard. A few days later I returned home, driving for four hours leaning my head out of the window because of a sleet storm. There were no ill effects at any time. How the healing was performed was a mystery to me, but I felt happier than ever before, knowing that I had found God, and that He was with me every moment.

Since that time I have been learning more and more about God and man's true relationship to Him. This knowledge naturally brings with it healing, and I have had many opportunities to prove God's ever-presence and all-power. It seemed for some time after that first experience that I was constantly repeating and proving the comforting verse from the forty-sixth Psalm, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." This verse and "the scientific statement of being" given on page 468 of our textbook were the first references I remember learning, and through realizing the truth contained in these statements I have been instantaneously healed of burns, fainting spells, dizziness, cuts, and colds.
