In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by...

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, under the marginal heading "Mortal mind dethroned," we find these words (pp. 151, 152): "That mortal mind claims to govern every organ of the mortal body, we have overwhelming proof. But this so-called mind is a myth, and must by its own consent yield to Truth. It would wield the sceptre of a monarch, but it is powerless. The immortal divine Mind takes away all its supposed sovereignty, and saves mortal mind from itself."

My first healing in Science helped me to understand the meaning of these words, because the medical diagnosis of my case was that everything was wrong and nothing was right. Just then a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel was sent to me by a friend in Canada. On reading a testimony, I resolved to find the Christian Science Reading Room.

During my first visit to the Reading Room, while I was reading Science and Health, it came to me in a flash that no matter who was against it, this is the truth. The next day I saw the Christian Science Quarterly on a table, with the Bible and Science and Health, and sat down to read the Lesson-Sermon. I did not get beyond the first portion, in which was the verse from Psalms, "One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple." Every word of that verse became illumined. It took complete possession of my thought. It ruled the day and it ruled the night, while a visit to the Reading Room was the main object of each day. About the tenth day I knew I was well. All things had become new.
