A letter "From a Lay Scientist" appearing in a recent issue of your paper makes mention of Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and criticizes the teaching of Christian Science in regard to suffering.

The critic is mistaken when he states that Christian Science ignores the value of sympathy. It requires only one brief quotation from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, to refute this assertion. On page 367 Mrs. Eddy writes, "The tender word and Christian encouragement of an invalid, pitiful patience with his fears and the removal of them, are better than hecatombs of gushing theories, stereotyped borrowed speeches, and the doling of arguments, which are but so many parodies on legitimate Christian Science, aflame with divine Love."

Christian Science is not to be confused with Eastern philosophy, nor does it advocate the use of human will power. This is made clear in Science and Health, as the following quotation indicates (p. 206): "Will-power is capable of all evil. It can never heal the sick, for it is the prayer of the unrighteous; while the exercise of the sentiments—hope, faith, love—is the prayer of the righteous. This prayer, governed by Science instead of the senses, heals the sick."
