I wish to correct certain false impressions that an article which appeared in a recent issue of the Cathedral Courier may have made on your readers. Study of this article leads me to conclude that your contributor has not read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and that he has not had access to an authentic biography of her or a reliable account of the movement she founded.

Your contributor states that Christian Science is neither Christian nor scientific. I submit that a religion which is founded on the Bible and the teachings of Christ Jesus, and whose followers believe that "to keep the commandments of our Master and follow his example, is our proper debt to him and the only worthy evidence of our gratitude for all that he has done" (Science and Health, p. 4), is rightly designated as Christian. Christian Scientists believe that Christ Jesus came to save men from sin, sickness, and death.

The word Science was used by Mrs. Eddy in its widest sense, as demonstrable knowledge of Truth. The term Science, taken in this sense, can well be applied to the knowledge and understanding of God. Jesus' knowledge and understanding of God were such that he was able to heal the sick, raise the dead, and reform sinners without recourse to material means, and he taught his disciples to do likewise. Christian Scientists are assured that Mrs. Eddy discovered the spiritual method of healing lost by Jesus' later followers, and they rejoice that one was found sufficiently spiritually-minded to perceive the Science underlying divine healing and give it to the world.
