Forewarned Is Forearmed

Warning that an epidemic of influenza is to be expected during the present winter recently emanated from a meeting of a division of the American Public Health Association. This warning was doubtless well-intentioned, but it might, nevertheless, tend to frighten those whose thought is not prepared to resist the encroachment of disease on the basis of its actual unreality.

There is a popular saying to the effect that to be forewarned is to be forearmed, and students of Christian Science, having been apprised of this predicted epidemic, will be alert to resist the suggestion that it is inescapable, through knowing that no type of disease, whether acute or chronic, can properly be termed either inescapable or irresistible. They will, therefore, not be alarmed by the prophecy that such an epidemic is to be expected, or that it is unavoidable.

Christian Scientists will resist the argument that influenza or any kind of so-called infectious or contagious disease is to be feared, because they understand that, in reality, there is no such thing as a germ disease or a disease germ. In divine Mind, which is the only real Mind, there is no consciousness of disease and, consequently, no fear of disease. Since fear is admittedly one of the principal mental mediums through which disease finds its way into human experience, it is obvious that the absence of fear affords a very great measure of protection. In fact, the displacing of fear by means of spiritual understanding affords complete protection from evil.
