On Being Truly Alert

Today we frequently hear the word "alert," which is defined in part as "watchful; vigilant." In these times, Christian Scientists need to be constantly awake to spiritual realities, that they may be ready at all times to meet the suggestions of destruction, evil, hate, and discord with the truth of God's ever-presence, harmony, and love, and of the permanence and continuity of good, having all power and filling all space.

The claims of the presence and power of evil are met by alertness in casting out fear with a firm conviction of God's loving care and protection for all that reflects Him, and in rejoicing that, since God is all-power, evil has no power to harm, and no real existence.

"Alert" also means "brisk; nimble; moving with celerity." Our mental alertness to truth and reality should be instant in action; never off guard; quick to reject the fear that would claim place in our thinking with the truth that fear is no part of man in God's image.
