Michael and Gabriel

As in the wilderness, when Jesus said,
"Get thee behind me, Satan," evil fled,
And in that place, erstwhile so dark and sinister,
The angels came unto our Lord to minister—

So to our hearts will angels come, when we
Seem in the tempter's wilderness to be,
Bringing us comfort, joy, and exaltation,
Making our deserts bloom with inspiration!

Strong Michael, faith's holy wars to fight;
Still Gabriel, imparting peace and light;
Courage to conquer doubt, fear, and dejection;
Assurance of Love's presence and protection.

Angels are thoughts, with heavenly power imbued,
Filling the heart with praise and gratitude;
Heralds of light, inspiring and commanding,
Soaring to heights on wings of understanding.

O Christ's disciples, do not be dismayed
When by the tempter's wiles you are assayed!
Lift up your eyes, behold, beyond the fearing,
There in the wilderness are angels nearing!

Ever God gives His angels charge to keep
His faithful servants, waking or asleep;
To those who watch and pray, true thoughts are winging;
Michael, Gabriel, grace and freedom bringing.
