In Matthew we read, "Freely ye have received, freely give." I have received much help and encouragement from the testimonies in the periodicals, and it is with a heart full of sincere gratitude and the desire to help and encourage others that I am adding mine.
About twenty-nine years ago a member of my family was healed through Christian Science treatment, in about two weeks, of a very serious bowel condition, after several doctors had declared they had done all they could. I began to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and the periodicals; then, later, the Lesson-Sermons, as given in the Christian Science Quarterly. I had been a member of an orthodox church and found I had much to unlearn as well as to learn, and it was not easy for me. But kind friends and practitioners patiently helped by answering my innumerable questions and turning me to the textbook.
Then a real testing time came for me when I had to prove whether or not I could rely wholly on Christian Science for help. What is called arthritis developed, and I grew gradually worse. The suffering was intense. I called on a practitioner for treatment. It was only with the greatest difficulty that I could move about the house. For at least a year I could not put shoes on, but wore my husband's slippers. I could not even walk in the garden, and some of the time could not raise my hand to my head. The nights were worse than the days, if that were possible. I tried one practitioner after another, until four or five had worked on the case. I now realize that every one of them helped in the healing, and I am grateful to them. The last one so patiently and loving encouraged me day after day, never admitting that there could be such a thing as failure, that finally the light of realization began to break through the dark cloud, and improvement began. The first night that I slept for two hours I tried to tell the practitioner about it next day, and could only weep for joy.
