A Christian Science Demonstration

Students of Christian Science are sometimes asked, "Just what constitutes a Christian Science demonstration?" There is nothing mysterious or supernatural about a Christian Science demonstration. In Christian Science, one demonstrates God, divine Principle, or basic Truth, whereby harmony is made manifest in human affairs. On page 14 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes: "To be 'present with the Lord' is to have, not mere emotional ecstasy or faith, but the actual demonstration and understanding of Life as revealed in Christian Science. To be 'with the Lord' is to be in obedience to the law of God, to be absolutely governed by divine Love,—by Spirit, not by matter."

A real Christian Science demonstration is a proof of the omnipotence and omnipresence of God, good, in the face of evil's claim to reality and power. Whatever the nature of the inharmony, scientific, correct reasoning, based on the understanding of what existence really is, changes the evidence of discord and restores harmony. Although the demonstration of good may sometimes seem little less than miraculous to those uninstructed in the Science of Mind-healing, it is the natural result of one's clear comprehension of divine metaphysics, together with one's firm adherence to Christianly scientific rules.

It is generally admitted that mathematical rules are demonstrable to the degree that one understands them. This is also true in regard to the rules of Christian Science. A mistake made in working out a mathematical problem must be seen as an error before it can be corrected. In the same way discords claiming to obtain in the human body or environment must be understandingly recognized as errors which may be corrected or destroyed by the application of Truth. As a correct understanding of the science of mathematics enables one to recognize mistakes and correct them, so erroneous beliefs of sin and sickness give way before the scientific understanding of God's allness and evil's nothingness.
