Love

In the fourth chapter of the first epistle of John we find these words: "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love."

Christian Science stresses Love as the very Principle of all real existence, the only Mind, Life, Truth, intelligence. In the light of this revealed truth a new understanding of divine Love springs up in the human heart with a vitality and sweetness that melts away all error. No longer is love seen as merely an emotional quality of the human mind, but as a living, vital presence, "God with us," expressed in that which is "altogether lovely," pure, and perfect.

Mankind in general has not regarded God as the loving Father-Mother of all and exemplified this teaching in daily living. Rather have hatred and intolerant thinking been indulged; but through Christian Science we can lift our thought to God in earnest, humble receptivity, and the softening influence of love and affection will flow in to heal all hardness and unloveliness. As we love, we forgive and destroy all that is unlike love. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 132), "Divine Love hath opened the gate Beautiful to us, where we may see God and live, see good in good,—God all, one,—one Mind and that divine; where we may love our neighbor as ourselves, and bless our enemies."
