Christian Science was presented to me, in 1912, by a friend, whose gentle, loving ways had so impressed me that I wished to know what was the source of her serenity. She lent me a book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, with the words, "This will tell you better than I ever could." I began reading with no prejudice and a heart so hungry for spiritual food that, from the first page on, I devoured it eagerly.

I had suffered the agony of seeing the death of two little sons, and was so anxious for our little daughter that her health also was in a precarious state, indigestion and nervousness being a part of her condition. My husband had suffered as I had, and we were in a state of tension, friction, and heartbreak, which was tormenting to both of us.

I had been prostrated with heart failure and nervous headaches for some time, and had been examined by the best physicians Chicago offered. Their only verdict had been, "Rest and quiet, and freedom from strain."
