Treasure in Heaven

Jesus loved the rich young man,
Beholding him.
His sweet obedience to the laws that Moses gave
Endeared him to the Master.
With tenderness, answering his eagerness,
"Sell that thou hast, give to the poor,
And follow me," he said;
"Thou shalt have treasure in heaven."

Then he who had come running,
Who had knelt
In quest of eternal Life,
Left, sorrowing.

But Jesus knew
In all the universe of heavenly Love
There is no recreant loyalty,
Nor even any hesitant,
Nor any partially consecrate,
No personal sense to find the Word of God
A saying hard and troublesome.

He knew some day the rich young man,
Radiant and eager,
Would kneel before the Christ with joy to claim
His treasure fair in heaven.
