I am deeply grateful that for more than twenty-five years I have had the protection that belongs to those who have found the "pearl of great price," that understanding of God which was so wonderfully demonstrated throughout the life and in the teachings of Christ Jesus, and later by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.

My first experience in seeking help for a physical trouble was shortly before my marriage. I had not read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, but I had heard Christian Science discussed by those who were familiar with certain healings which had resulted from metaphysical work done by students of this Science, and it appealed to me as reasonable that the same healing work which was done by Jesus and his disciples was possible today if one believed in the power of God.

Although I knew very little of the power of Christian Science to heal disease, I was willing to talk to a practitioner and ask for treatment for a severe affection of the nerves of the eyes. In just a few days I was entirely well. I acknowledged my healing to the practitioner and to my family and was grateful for the release from fear, but was not sufficiently grateful to study the textbook or to attend the services of the Christian Science Society in the city where I lived after my marriage.
